About Orthodontic Treatment - Kids
Orthodontics for Kids
Taking care of your child's smile should start early for lifelong dental health. At Braceface, we recommend scheduling your child's first orthodontic exam by the age of 6. Look out for signs like early or late loss of teeth, difficulty in chewing, mouth breathing, finger/thumb-sucking, excessive wear, severe crowding , cross-bites, eruption problems, or any unusual oral habits, Our goal is to catch and monitor potential issues with jaw growth and emerging teeth while baby teeth are still in place. Remember, we can enhance smiles at any age, but the earlier we catch potential problems, the better.
Why at 6 years?
Around 6 years old is an ideal time for the first orthodontic visit unless a specific issue arises earlier. Our team at Braceface believes in proactive care to identify concerns early, allowing us to track your child's growth and development effectively.
For the Little Ones
For families with preschoolers, the American Dental Association suggests the first dental visit at three years old. By then, primary teeth have usually erupted, making it a comfortable time to check and clean teeth. We'll also provide guidance on proper tooth brushing and maintaining a healthy diet for optimal dental health.
QUICK TIP
● Rinse your mouth with warm water after having anything containing sugar. This will dissolve some of the cavity causing sugar.
● If you don't have a toothbrush handy, swish water around your mouth after eating to remove food particles.
Benefits of Correcting Bite Problems Early:
Early detection and treatment not only prevent future dental issues but can also save time and costs in the long run. At Braceface, we prioritizes conservative treatment options, using the latest interceptive methods to correct problems before they escalate and potentially require surgical correction. This proactive approach is often termed Phase I treatment and aims to reduce future brace treatment time and ensure a stable, healthy bite for a lifetime.
Potential Benefits of Phase I Treatment:
● Positive influence on jaw growth.
● Improvement in the width of the upper or lower arch.
● Maintenance or creation of space for erupting teeth.
● Possible reduction or elimination of the need for future jaw surgery.
● Decreased likelihood of future extractions.
● Correction of harmful oral habits.
● Minimization of the risk of trauma to protrusive front teeth.
● Enhancement of speech development.
● Shortening of treatment time for Phase II.
● Improvement in aesthetics and self-esteem.
Phase I Treatment:
Involving interventions like space maintainers, partial braces, active retainers, Myobrace or Twinblocks Phase I treatment targets moderate to severe orthodontic issues that can't wait. Dr. Daya is cautious in recommending Phase I treatment, ensuring its necessity for significant overall improvement. The goal is to aid in jaw development, allowing adequate room for future permanent teeth eruption and enhancing the upper and lower jaws bite relationship.
Phase I treatment typically spans 12 months, depending on patient cooperation. After completion the patient is monitored for the eruption of remaining permanent teeth.
Transition to Phase II Treatment:
When most or all permanent teeth have erupted, Phase II treatment is recommended, typically between ages 10-12. Upper and lower braces are applied to align and position teeth, optimizing appearance and function. The prior Phase I treatment often eliminates the need for extractions, shortening treatment time to 12-18 months and requiring fewer rubber bands.
Early intervention sets the stage for a lifetime of optimal dental health, improved aesthetics, and enhanced self-esteem.

Common Adult Concerns
Adults often approach us with concerns like crooked teeth and bad bites. Beyond the cosmetic aspect, these issues can contribute to problems such as tooth decay, abnormal wear, gum and bone loss, tooth loss, headaches, and jaw pain (TMJ). "Malocclusion," a term orthodontists use to describe a bad bite, can occur due to misalignments in the teeth or jaw. Our aim is to achieve the correct functional occlusion (a good bite) for each patient, ensuring not only improved oral health but also a significant boost in personal appearance and self-esteem.
Beyond Cosmetic Benefits
While orthodontics can certainly enhance your smile, many adults may not realize the long-term advantages. Well-aligned and properly fitting teeth can contribute to a lifetime of healthy teeth. Our adult patients often express deep appreciation for the numerous benefits of orthodontic treatment after living with unfavorable smiles and bites for years.
Understanding Orthodontics
Orthodontics isn't just about straightening teeth; it's a specialized field in dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating irregularities in dental facial structures. In simpler terms, it's all about achieving a harmonious bite. The technical term for these issues is "malocclusion," essentially referring to a bad bite.
The art and science of orthodontics demands a high level of expertise in designing, applying, and managing corrective appliances—commonly known as braces. These appliances work to align teeth, lips, and jaws properly, ultimately bringing about a balanced and aesthetically pleasing facial structure. In essence, orthodontics is more than just a treatment; it's a skillful practice aimed at enhancing both the function and appearance of your smile.

Why Choose Braces?
Your dentist might have chatted with you about the perks of maintaining healthy teeth and a well-aligned jaw. It's true—crooked and crowded teeth can be a hassle to clean and keep in tip-top shape. This can lead to tooth decay, worsen gum disease, and even result in tooth loss. Other orthodontic issues can cause abnormal wear on tooth surfaces, make chewing less efficient, and put extra stress on gums and the supporting bone. Misalignment of the jaw joints might even lead to chronic headaches or pain in the face and neck. Opting for orthodontic treatment can often be more cost-effective than dealing with additional dental care down the road.
The Beauty of Orthodontics
For many, the most noticeable perk of orthodontics is the beautiful smile it brings. A comprehensive orthodontic plan not only enhances the health of your teeth and gums but also works wonders for your personal appearance and self-esteem, giving you the confidence you never had.
How Orthodontic Treatment Works
Braces come in various materials—metal, ceramic, or plastic—and can be either removable or fixed brackets bonded to your teeth. The magic happens as these appliances apply a gentle, constant force in a carefully controlled direction, gradually moving your teeth to their corrected positions. Forget the old days of metal bands and brackets on every tooth. Now, you can choose clear or metallic-colored brackets, and wires are less conspicuous. Modern materials also mean quicker tooth movement with less discomfort.
Treatment Duration
Traditionally, braces take about two to three years for treatment. Keep in mind that everyone's growth and response to treatment vary, so the time to complete the case may differ from the initial estimate. In some cases, early treatment procedures (interceptive) can wrap up in as little as six months, offering a faster path to a confident smile.
